WHY DID OWN IT START?
OWN IT started to address the leadership gap. Women have filled the education gap--in fact, they are graduating college at higher rates than men. However, there is still a lack of women sitting on corporate boards, in science and technology, in C-level positions, representing us in government, and in general leadership roles. You cannot be what you cannot see. OWN IT gives young women the opportunity not just to see, but to learn from and connect with female leaders in various fields. OWN IT seeks to provide well-established women with an outlet to give back and share what they have learned with the next generation of women leaders.
WHEN DID OWN IT START?
OWN IT was started by Helen Brosnan and Kendall Ciesemier during their time at Georgetown University in 2014. The inaugural OWN IT Summit was held at Georgetown in April 2014 and brought over 40 speakers and 400 attendees together. The success of the inaugural summit in 2014 spurred nationwide expansion in 2015. We now have satellite summits at eleven universities in the country, including one in Puerto Rico! The most recent summit at Georgetown featured more than 800 attendees, 100 speakers, 30 breakout sessions. OWN IT UPenn had its inaugural summit in the spring of 2017 and it was a huge success! We are thrilled to be planning the event for 2018, and to continue to bring incredible, accomplished women to campus!
